📌 Overview & Instructions
In this course, you will complete three major discussion assignments, each designed to deepen your understanding of course concepts, strengthen your academic voice, and foster meaningful dialogue with your peers. These discussions are not weekly, but are strategically placed throughout the semester, with each post contributing 5% toward your final grade.
This is your first discussion assignment. Please read the instructions carefully and choose one of the prompts below to respond to.
🎯 Purpose and Expectations
Discussion posts are more than just assignments—they are opportunities to reflect, connect, and grow. You’ll respond to a prompt posted under this “Discussion Board” section and engage with your classmates in a thoughtful, respectful manner.
For each discussion assignment, you are expected to:
- ✅ Carefully read the instructions and the associated rubric for grading criteria.
- ✅ Submit an initial post (minimum 200 words) by Thursday at 11:59 PM EST of the assigned week. This allows time for peer engagement before Sunday. Your initial post is REQUIRED for you to view what your classmates have posted.
- ✅ Include evidence-based arguments supported by at least two scholarly, peer-reviewed sources cited in APA format (see below).
- ✅ Post at least one meaningful reply (see below) to a peer by Sunday at 11:59 PM EST. Your reply should offer constructive feedback, ask questions, or expand on their ideas—one-word responses like “cool” or “lit” are unacceptable.
- ✅ Respond to replies on your own post to promote real dialogue (like in Yellowdig!).
Reply Requirements Based on Submission Timing:
- If you submit your initial post before Thursday at 11:59 PM EST, you are only required to reply to one peer.
- If you submit your initial post after Thursday at 11:59 PM EST, you must reply to two peers.
Unsure what to comment on? Try the TAG method!
- Tell them something you liked or learned from their post.
- Ask a follow-up question.
- Give general comments. These could be politely constructive or something positive.
Late submissions will not be accepted. Please monitor the course calendar for the final due date!
Note that the forum is subdivided into 3 groups of about 20 students each. This is meant to provide a greater chance of dialogue, rather than all viewing 60+ posts in the same forum and possibly a fraction of students not receiving peer comments.
🧾 APA Style & Academic Integrity
You are required to cite at least two (2) reputable sources using APA formatting, including both in-text citations and a reference list at the end of your post. This applies to any ideas, quotes, or paraphrased content from readings, videos, or other materials.
📚 Citations MUST be from a reputable source! Preferably from a peer-reviewed journal article located from the NIH's library called PubMedLinks to an external site. or theFIU Library pageLinks to an external site. to avoid any potential paywalls/subscription fees. Sources from a .gov or .edu site are acceptable (but peer-reviewed articles are strongly preferred!). Science-related articles from major newspapers and media outlets are NOT always considered reputable sources-- if you find a study that was promoted by a news outlet, find and read the original citation (usually stated in the article or locate it in PubMed/FIU Library).
- In-text citation example: According to the American Psychological Association (2024), APA Style promotes clarity and precision in scholarly communication.

⚠️ Submission of AI-generated content (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, DeepSeek, etc) is strictly prohibited. All work must be your own! Submissions that include AI-generated text will be flagged and could be subject to academic integrity review.

Choose ONE of the Following Five Discussion Prompts
Option 1: The Lifelong Brain – Development and Decline
Discuss how the processes of brain development and degeneration reflect the brain’s plasticity across the lifespan. How do early experiences shape neural architecture, and how might similar mechanisms contribute to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s? Support your discussion with at least two peer-reviewed sources.
Option 2: Genes, Experience, and Behavior
Explore the interaction between genes and environment in shaping behavior. How can epigenetic mechanisms help explain individual differences in stress responses or cognitive development? Use examples from either human and animal research (preferably one that was not included in the textbook), and cite at least two scholarly sources.
Option 3: The Psychology of Pain – A Multidimensional Experience
Pain is not just a biological signal—it is shaped by emotional, cognitive, and contextual factors. Discuss how the brain processes pain through sensory, emotional, and evaluative components. How can psychological interventions (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness) complement medical treatments in managing chronic pain? Support your discussion with at least two scholarly sources.
Option 4: Sensory Experience and Brain Development
How does early sensory experience influence brain development and function? Use evidence from studies on visual development or sensory deprivation to support your argument. What are the implications for education or early intervention programs? Cite at least two scholarly sources.
Option 5: Motor Disorders and Brain Function
In class, we discussed Parkinson's and Huntington's Disease and how the pathologies contribute to their respective motor deficits. Choose another motor disorder/disease (there are manyyy more to choose from!) and describe its behavioral symptoms and underlying neural pathology. How does that disorder/disease illustrate the role of cortical and subcortical structures in motor control? Support your discussion with at least two peer-reviewed sources.
