This unit reinforced what we learned in Unit VI about medical coding systems and took it a step further to include its involvement with the reimbursement process. With this journal entry, tie in what you have learned about the importance of accurate health data collection with the tools and systems that are used to ensure compliance and efficiency.
For the journal entry, answer the questions below:
- Outline a specific coding software/encoder used to assist medical coders in diagnostic (ICD-10-CM) and procedural (CPT) code selection.
- Discuss the importance of auditing patient medical records when it comes to medical billing and coding. In your opinion, what are the characteristics that make up an effective auditing system?
- Fraud, waste, and abuse continue to drain millions of dollars from the U.S. medical industry. What initiatives or activities do you find most effective in combating intentional medical fraud and/or waste caused by human error?
Your response should be at least two pages in length, not counting a title page and a reference page. Include an introduction to the paper. Use at least two sources, of which one can be your textbook. Use APA Style formatting.
