The largest ambulatory surgery center chain in Apollo Bay, Surgical Care Associates (SCA) has experienced increases in surgical site infections (SSIs). Simons, feeling overwhelmed, consulted with his graduate school mentor, Edna O’Donnell, who gave him the confidence he needed to embark on his first quality improvement project. Simons first visited each of the six surgery centers and interviewed the clinic administrators and the staff. He uncovered various leadership styles and varying degrees of hand hygiene compliance.
