Discussion post

Changes in blood pressure can occur for many reasons with patients admitted into acute care centers. When arterial blood pressure falls below 60mmHg, towards 15mmHg to 20mmHg, CNS stimulus to regulate arterial pressure is at its greatest degree. These emergency pressure control systems act rapidly to prevent decline as a "last ditch stand", prior to death. How have you experienced this scenario, during clinical rotations or as a practitioner or only in textbook descriptions?

Instructions:

  • Identify a protocol or process used at your institution that is used to quickly respond to rapid arterial pressure decline.
  • What role do you or respiratory therapists play within the protocol or process at your institution?
  • Provide evidence-based literature that informs the protocol or process.

  • Each initial response must be at least 300 words, demonstrate course-related knowledge (integration of the course textbook), and include at least one peer-reviewed source. Please refer to the rubric below when constructing.
