So, let's look at your sleep habits and sleepiness along with your risk of OSA

Overview

So, let's look at your sleep habits and sleepiness along with your risk of OSA... Do you achieve enough sleep? Do you wake and sleep at fairly consistent times? Can you easily fall asleep during the day? Do you consume excessive amounts of caffeine to stay awake? Do you snore or wake up feeling out of breath? The Epworth Sleepiness Scale and a sleep diary are two tools that sleep specialists use to assess your sleepiness and to determine if your schedule or other activities may influence your sleep quality. The STOP-BANG screening tool helps assess one’s risk for obstructive sleep apnea. Although these surveys are not fool proof, they are a useful tool in picking up on sleepiness and risk of OSA.

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale gives us an idea of how sleepy you are, where a sleep diary helps monitor your sleep schedule, hours of sleep, caffeine, alcohol, and medication intake. This information can help highlight any relationship with insomnia or fatigue. The STOP-BANG looks at biological factors such as blood pressure, witnessed behaviors, age, and physiology that may predict OSA risk.

This assignment will be a focus on your sleep. You are not graded on how much you sleep, just that you submit the assignment as outlined and perform an analysis per the requirements below.

Note: Additional time has been given to collect the necessary data and to perform an analysis of your findings

1.Using attached sleep diary Complete a total of 7 days (one week) worth of data on your sleep diary to reflect trending in sleep and influencing factors.

2.Use the assignment template and rename the file with your name and assignment identifier (example: Joe Dirt_Week Two Sleepiness and OSA Risk Assignment). This document contains three (3) sections: Epworth Sleepiness Scale, STOP-BANG Questionnaire, and sleep analysis form.

Note: If the sleep diary was printed and completed in hand-writing, submit an electronic copy either by scanning it to a PDF file or you can take a picture and submit as a JPG file.

Using page 3 of the Week Two Sleepiness and OSA Risk Assignment_Template, write an analysis of your sleep including responses to the following prompts. Ensure to assess your sleep patterns, including quantity and quality, as compared to normal:

1.Comparing to Dr. Murray Johns' website, how do you rank on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale? Is the result normal or abnormal and what does it tell you?

2.How many hours do you sleep each night compared to the average sleep required for an adult? What is the amount of sleep needed for an adult of your age? Is your sleep disrupted? If so, tell me what is causing these disruptions.

3.Are there any barriers that you see that interfere with you getting enough sleep? If there are barriers, are these within your control and can you avoid or resolve these barriers?

4.Do you see any relationships between caffeine intake and your sleep quality? If so, are there adjustments that can be made to improve quantity and quality of sleep?

5.How did you score on the STOP-BANG Questionnaire? Do you feel these results accurately reflect your risk of OSA? Tell me why or why not.

6.Should you seek help from a sleep physician or have a sleep study? With either answer, explain your reasoning.
