- Apply knowledge and theory related to the prevention, diagnosis, and management of select uncomplicated common acute and chronic health problems for individuals across the lifespan.
- Develop a health maintenance plan for patients at all ages and stages.
- Lay the foundation of ordering labs and diagnostics including health maintenance.
- Explain the difference between screening, diagnosing/detecting, and monitoring labs.
Overview
This discussion features 3 patient vignettes. The patients will have a variety of conditions and issues. You will pick one patient then address the health maintenance to be ordered (supporting your choices). Then, you will respond to one other student’s post supporting the exams ordered with ICD/CMS support for the lab or suggesting changes to the exams ordered. The response will discuss if exams were needed or excessive, and why.
Vignettes
Kristin Cole is a 41-year-old female who presents to your primary care office. She has never had a pelvic exam and knows very little about her family history, except that she herself was a large baby weighing over 9 pounds. Kristin works as a cashier and spends a lot of time on her feet. She feels tired and frustrated.
Alvin Klein is a 3-year-old male who presents to your primary care office. He lives in a house that is 100-years old and loves to pay outside on his bike. Mom says his delivery was uneventful, but she is not good about bringing him in regularly. They eat an organic vegetarian diet.
Barry Stewart is a 68-year-old male who presents to your primary care office. He is having issues with frequent urination and had not been followed by a PCP in many years. Barry thinks it is time for him to take care of his health. He says that back when he was in his 50’s he was diagnosed as diabetic but he doesn’t take any medications.

- Why were those screenings appropriate to the patient?
- Are there screening items missing?
