Create a positive body message.
Your textbook emphasizes the significant influence mass media has on body image for both males and females through the use of negative messages about ideal body shapes and sizes. Some of these media sources include websites, magazines, music videos, television shows and commercials, video games, and cinema.
Additionally, you have completed a Body Image and Social Media Literature Review and Yellowdig Discussion assignment on a topic of your choice.
In this assignment, you will design a message that EITHER
1) exposes the mass media's negative influence on the public's perceptions of what a healthy and ideal body looks like (based on your text readings)
OR
2) explains key and impactful points taken from the current literature (use your Body Image and Social Media Literature Review and Yellowdig Discussion assignment for your topic and to locate key points for your Positive Body Image Message).
Instructions:
Choose any format you deem appropriate for your message.
Consider the following formats:
- A Magazine Cover: Include a cover picture, magazine title, featured topics/relevant convincing research points, topics of interest, cover story, and anything else you feel is important.
- A Facebook Post: Create a post you could share on Facebook that includes a picture and relevant research points to help your friends and family understand the negative influence of media on male and female body image.
- An Instagram Post: Create a post you could share on Instagram that includes a picture and relevant research points to help your friends and family understand the negative influence of media on male and female body image.
- A PowerPoint: Create a presentation you would share with kids or adults to warn them of the dangers of media influence on their personal body image perceptions: include pictures, relevant research points, and activities you would have learners engage in to help them understand the presented material.
- A TikTok or Other Video: Include relevant research points.
- Your Idea: Send me an email with your proposal.
Include at least FIVE points/statements that highlight or expose the negative influence of mass media on body image or are key and influential points from your Module 5 Literature Review assignment. Your key points should be taken from your readings and should include the research summarized in the assigned chapter or article you chose.
Utilize other sources you deem appropriate.
Include your sources for each of the FIVE points you include, using APA format (in-text citations, image citations, and a References page).
Be creative, have fun with the assignment, and really consider the magnitude and prevalence of the effects of media on body image or the effects of the topic you chose. I encourage you to express your health educator hearts and share your final message using your own social media networks.
Follow the directions below for submitting your assignment (you must attach the file to the submission link AND post your presentation in the correct discussion board AND copy and paste the web URL from your discussion post page and add it to the assignment comments/text box with your submission). (10 points). IF YOU DO NOT SUBMIT CORRECTLY, YOU WILL LOSE 10 POINTS.
In order to earn all 30 points, your presentation must:
- Include at least FIVE points/statements (in text citations to cite all your sources; APA format) that highlight or expose the negative influence of mass media on body image (these points should be taken from your readings; 4 points for each of the FIVE).
- Include the research summarized in the assigned chapter or the article you chose for the Module 5 Literature Review assignment. Remember, you may also utilize other sources,
- Cite all of your sources (APA format) within your assignment (3 point deduction if this is not included), and
- Be visually appealing with consistent use of graphics and formatting (example: if you are capitalizing headlines, then ALL headlines in your visual aid must be capitalized; up to a 3 point deduction if not included). Use this PDF to help you find and cite your images.
- Attach the file to the submission link AND post your presentation in the correct discussion board AND copy and paste the web URL from your discussion post page and add it to the assignment comments/text box with your submission). (10 points).
- Remember, each spelling or grammar error will result in a .5 point loss.
