SELF REFLECTION

Overview

Self-reflection is a vital practice for continuous growth in medicine. Please take some time to thoughtfully reflect on your experiences and learning thus far in Person-Centred Care (PCC). Your reflection should be concise, focusing on key takeaways and future development. This is an opportunity for personal learning and development.

Please address the following points in your reflection:

  1. Strengths & Accomplishments:
    1. Identify one or two specific clinical skills or aspects of your peer and standardized patient interactions that you feel particularly confident in or execute well? Why do you think you were successful in these aspects? ANS:😇 something along the lines of generally treating the peers/simulation patient with empathy, this is an inherent part of my personality, so for me, it's easier to execute it. ive been given feedback that im able to make the patient feel super comfortable. I guess i grew up taking care of my grandparents and now my husband, which makes it natural for me to connect right away.. etc, add anything more. my best skill is making sure my demeaner is warm and that the patient feels comfortable.
    2. Provide concrete examples from your practice sessions or simulations that demonstrate these strengths. ANS: im not sure how to answer this, but i remember asking the patient if they needed assistance getting up, if they needed a minute to gather themselves, if they needed pillows. i also included them in the treatment process by asking them to help me while taking their waist circumference.
  2. Areas for Growth:
    1. Identify one or two specific clinical skills, communication techniques, or professional approaches where you recognize a clear need for improvement.- i forgot to wash my hands before one of the exams, i also ended up using many personal relatable stories.
    2. Be honest and precise about what makes these areas challenging for you.- I think i forgot to wash my hands because there is no washing station in the room, but yes, i should have been more mindful. Sometimes many people and tasks happening together can impact how i structure things and thats why i forgot. in the attempts to have a meaningful interaction, sometimes i do go overboard and go out of my way to make many stories, i think i do this out of making sure the patient feels comfortable but sometimes a little goes a long way? (FIX ENGLISH) Add a few things here in Q2 AND Q1 to make it more realistic, dont use AI.
  3. EXPAND ON THE STUFF I SAID ABOVE TO answer Q3 : Action Plan for Improvement:
    1. Outline concrete, actionable steps you plan to take to address the identified areas for growth.
    2. Consider specific resources (e.g., practice opportunities, peer feedback, faculty guidance, independent study) or strategies you will employ.

Submission and Formatting Guidelines

  • Use of Generative AI: All submissions must reflect students’ original words and should reasonably demonstrate students’ own knowledge, understanding and performance. Any AI output used in assignments (e.g. visuals, data modelling) must be factually verified using reputable sources and properly cited using AMA referencing style which includes the AI prompt input. Any text directly copied and used in assignments will be considered plagiarism. Students are encouraged to track their drafts and rough work (e.g., use of Google Docs).

part 2:

Self Reflection Prompt:

  1. Reflect on why it is important for non-Indigenous Peoples to understand the difference between First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples. How would you compare and contrast the language we use to describe Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous Peoples in Canada?
  1. Reflect on your own experiences as a patient, family member or advocate in our healthcare system. Have you seen examples of trauma-informed, culturally safe care in practice? If not, reflect on why that may be the case, and how, based on your lived experiences and discussions you’ve had in this course, experiences could have been improved.
