Maya has a history of being sexually abused by a private tutor when she was eight. She received counselling soon after, when the event came to light. But now, five years later, Maya is self-harming when she feels anxious about social situations, such as attending school, eating in front of people, going out to the shops, or reading comments on social media that she perceives are targeted at her. Maya lives with her two parents and a younger sister. The parents feel that Maya is self-harming for attention and that Maya is a bad influence on her younger sister. They have brought Maya along to you because they want Maya to stop self-harming. Maya doesn’t make eye contact, sits slumped with her hair over her face, responds in monosyllables when asked questions, and is not interested in receiving more therapy.
