Overview

A. The standard Final Project involves two project paths:

1.Interview a person with a sleep diagnosis, or

2.Conduct an observation at a sleep lab or a durable medical equipment (DME).

Note: You are responsible to set-up the observation/interview; however, let me know if you need help or have questions. You will also be asked to submit a written reflection of your experience.

Here are the instructions and grading criteria associated with this Final Project

Important: The final project requires a moderate amount of preparation. This project is intended to be a learning experience for the student that will expand upon and reinforce what is covered in this course. Students will be asked to choose a project path that will result in new knowledge; therefore, if you have experienced a specific activity, you should select a different path. For example: If you work in a sleep lab, you will observe at a DME or do an interview. In addition, interviewing a person in whom you have prior knowledge of their specific case is not acceptable. Take advantage of this opportunity to develop your comprehension of the material and to improve your competency as a practitioner of healthcare.

1.Choose one of the following project paths:

a.Observation: Contact and arrange a ≥ 3 hour observation in one of the following:

§Sleep diagnostic lab

§Durable medical equipment (DME) company that performs CPAP/PAP setups.

§Sleep clinic

OR

b.Interview: Interview an individual diagnosed with a sleep disorder.

§This can be shorter in duration, but must also include a list of at least 15 interview questions with responses from the patient.

AND (for both the interview and the observation)

2.4-page (minimum length requirement) written reflection of the experience, and support your findings with written references. At minimum, one of these references must be from a peer-reviewed article. Ensure to address each of the following points in your discussion:

a.Observation:

§Describe the role of the people you spent time with – what do they do and how does it compare to what you have learned?

§What aspects of the job/interaction did you expect to see? Why would you expect to see these activities?

§What aspects of the job/interaction were not what you expected? How do you think these activities improve patient care or sleep study quality?

§What were 3 new things you discovered (beyond what you learned in class)?

§Any other observations.

b.Interview*:

§What is the person’s sleep disorder diagnosis and associated risk factors and consequences?

§What treatment, if any, is prescribed and how are they doing on it? Provide specific details on the treatment. For example: describe PAP mode and pressure settings, EPR/CFlex use, mask type, etc.

§What challenges has this person had in relation to their diagnosis and/or treatment?

§What did you learn from the individual and their experience? Does their experience compare to the standard of care?

§Any other observations.

* Include outline of the 15 questions and responses (not included in written reflection minimum page requirement.PLEASE SELECT INTERVIEW A PERSON WITH SLEEP DISORDER. MY PROFESSION IS RESPIRATORY THERAPIST
