Overview
Reflection Paper 1: Leadership Self-Awareness and Styles
Directions and Guidelines
Step 1: Preparation Requirements
- Research leadership theories and styles.
- Complete the required online self-assessments and print your results for submission. You will use them again for Reflective Paper 2. Think of this as the beginning of creating a management/leadership portfolio.
Students must review classical and contemporary leadership theories and styles (e.g., transformational, situational, ethical leadership) using course materials and at least one peer-reviewed source. This research will be integrated throughout the reflection paper and cited using APA 7th edition format.
- Read and print the description of your type from http://www.myersbriggs.org/my-mbti-personality-type/mbti-basics/(read about other types, too)
Step 2: Writing the Reflection Paper
Part I: Profile of Yourself (Self-Assessment Analysis)
Describe yourself, as reflected in the results of the 8 online assessments that you completed. Be sure to include:
- What surprised you, if anything?
- Do you disagree with any of the results?
- Describe the significance of these results to you.
- Describe how your styles play out in your clinical or school-related experiences.
Part II:Application of New Insights to a Specific Situation
Give at least one concrete example from your clinical or educational experiences that illustrates how your styles affected/affect your behavior. Be sure to include:
- How your actions in this situation were “typical” or illustrative of your individual styles.
- How your style/type may have differed from that of others in the situation, and how this influenced the outcome of the situation.
- If this situation arose again, what you would do differently, if anything?
Part III:Summary: Reflections for Growth
Think about the new insights you may now have about yourself. Answer the following:
- What would you like to change or develop in yourself? How could you go about making these changes?
- How could you use this knowledge about yourself (knowledge about your own styles) to improve your interactions with clients, families, and staff, or your family and friends?
- What did you find about yourself that you would NOT want to change?Which of the findings would you like to use on your resume and broadcast as one of your strengths?
Step 3: Formatting and Submission Requirements
- Length: Two (2) full pages of narrative content; exclude title page, reference page, and assessment printouts
- Format: APA 7th edition
- Reference: Minimum of one peer-reviewed source; online self-assessments may not count as peer-reviewed source
