HBR Editors. (2016). Your project needs a charter. Here’s what that means (Links to an external site.). Harvard Business Review.
Select a project that meets the following criteria:
- You have application knowledge.
- You will be able to gather information about resource requirements, work effort and duration estimates.
- A project you are about to plan for, and that you have not started yet. It should not be a project that you are currently involved in at work.
- Contains a minimum length of 3-month work effort and at a maximum, a 2-year work effort.
- Human resources will not exceed 25 stakeholders.
- Meets the PMBOK definition of a project: "A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. The temporary nature of projects indicates that a project has a definite beginning and end."
NOTE: YOUR INDIVIDUAL PROJECT CANNOT BE AT ALL SIMILAR TO THE LISTED TEAM PROJECTS. YOU MUST SUBMIT AN ORIGINAL PROJECT PLAN. If you have any questions, you can contact your instructor.
Write the Project Charter. This is an important document needed to give authority to you, the Project Manager, to move forward with planning and use of organizational resources in this endeavor.
Select a Project Charter format to use from your organization. Compare the format to the elements of a Project Charter outlined in Part 1, Section 4.1.3.1 of the PMBOK.
Note. If you cannot locate a format to use from your organization, search for a format online or develop one of your own based on the elements outlined in Part 1, Section 4.1.3.1 of the PMBOK. or refer to the Library Research Guide for further assistance: https://library.harrisburgu.edu/PMGT_540Links to an external site.
Refer to the rubric provided. Each of the sections of the Charter will be evaluated for completeness and quality (i.e., realistic content) as it relates to your project.
Consider how you might approach getting your organization to revise their Project Charter format to ensure it meets PMBOK minimum best practices.
Include a title page with the date, your name and the assignment name.
Use File Naming Convention: Year Month Day_Last Name_First Name_Assignment Name
Refer to the assignment rubric. The assignment will be graded using the rubric.
Cite all sources used.
Submit your completed project charter as a Word File by the due date by clicking on the assignment in Canvas and uploading the document.
Please Note: The level of performance expected for students on core competencies and program learning outcomes varies depending on the course. The numbers at the end of the key assignment name identify the expected level of performance for a specific key assignment. For example, for the key assignment entitled “HU14 GEND 201 Final Research Paper KA1 85%2,” the 85%2 part of the title means that 85% of students are expected to score a level 2 on a four-point scale where level 1 represents a novice rating, and a level 4 represents an advanced rating.
