Overview
This week, we are focusing on the CPT Guidelines sections for the Cardiovascular and Respiratory chapters. I suggest you review the gray “Guidelines” section at the beginning of each chapter in your CPT book and use that content to help you find the answers.
The goal of this discussion is to strengthen your ability to navigate and apply CPT guideline language.
In your response:
• Provide the answer based on the CPT Guidelines section
• Paraphrase in your own words
• Briefly explain why that guideline is important for accurate coding
Cardiovascular System
- According to the Cardiovascular System Guidelines, what is included in cardiac catheterization services unless otherwise specified?
- In the Cardiovascular Guidelines section, how does CPT instruct coders to report selective versus nonselective catheterization?
- According to the introductory guidelines, when both diagnostic and therapeutic cardiovascular services are performed at the same session, what criteria must be met to report the diagnostic service separately?
Respiratory System
- According to the Respiratory System Guidelines, what services are included (bundled) in bronchoscopy procedures unless otherwise stated?
- In the Respiratory Guidelines section, how does CPT instruct coders to report thoracentesis when imaging guidance is performed?
- According to the introductory Respiratory guidelines, what determines whether a procedure is reported as open, endoscopic, or thoracoscopic?
Peer Reply Requirement
Reply to at least one classmate. You may expand on their explanation, provide additional clarification from the guidelines, or connect the guideline to a coding compliance scenario.
