Case Study Assignment: Hospital Fined for “Patient Dumping”
On March 30, 2016, Pacifica Hospital of the Valley discharged 38-year-old Kasey Lucious, a
patient with a history of mental illness and homelessness, after a 30-day stay. Hospital staff put
Lucious in a taxi to Crenshaw Nursing Home without contacting her family and without
confirming that the nursing home would admit her. Lucious was dropped off at the nursing home but never checked in. Her family filed a missing person report, and she was found wandering the streets 3 days later. The hospital agreed to a settlement of $1 million to resolve allegations that it failed to follow homeless patient discharge protocol.
