Overview
Health care organizations operate within increasingly complex clinical, technological, regulatory, and social environments. Leaders in health informatics and health care administration must be prepared to navigate workforce diversity, interdisciplinary collaboration, evolving societal expectations, and continuous organizational change and apply health leadership competencies effectively to address the challenges faced by contemporary health care organizations.
Part 1: Leadership Framework Presentation
Read the attached “Meridian Integrated Health Network Case Study” to become familiar with the leadership challenges the organization is facing. Review the leadership competencies outlined in Chapter 5 of the textbook and utilize the "Health Informatics and Information Management Research Guide” topic Resource and your own research to learn more about health care leadership best practices and specific health leadership competencies, including knowledge, skills, and abilities, and leadership theories and models.
Formulate a leadership strategy that can be employed by Meridian Integrated Health Network. Utilize the "Health Informatics and Information Management Research Guide,” including the section on “Public Speaking & Presentations,” to help develop a 12-15 slide digital presentation that outlines the strategy for the executive leadership team. The presentation should address the following:
Health Care Complexity and Leadership Competence
- Describe how health care industry complexities, such as workforce diversity, organizational environment, and societal expectations, are manifesting at Meridian based on the details provided in the case study.
- Explain why it is essential for health care leaders to master competencies related to communication, conflict resolution, motivation, interpersonal relationships, and influence processes. Share research-based leadership best practices related to each of these key areas.
Workforce Complexity, Communication Failure, and Conflict Management
- Describe the issues Meridian is facing related to communication and conflict management. Explain how the complexity of Meridian’s workforce contributes to communication breakdowns and conflict.
- Summarize how applying research-based best practices for communication and conflict management could increase staff motivation, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and foster commitment rather than compliance or resistance.
Communication Strategy and Conflict Management Outcomes
- Predict the likely organizational outcomes if the leaders at Meridian continue to rely on avoiding and competing conflict management strategies versus what the organization could expect if research-based compromising, accommodating, and problem-solving approaches are applied.
- Discuss specific strategies that could be applied to address communication and conflict management at Meridian and predict the outcome of continuing to rely primarily on memorandum and electronic communication versus face-to-face communication when disseminating urgent and/or ambiguous messages and addressing conflict.
Analysis of Health Leadership Competencies
- Based upon what you have learned about research-based best practices for health care leadership and the key knowledge, skills, and abilities successful leadership requires, summarize how Meridian is currently leading and specify the leadership competencies that seem to be lacking.
- Advocate how addressing the leadership competency gaps by adopting a united leadership approach could improve communication and conflict resolution and increase motivation for the organization. Provide concrete examples of what is and is not working at Meridian and support your suggestions for addressing competency gaps by citing relevant research that is not from the textbook.
Leadership Framework
- Consider all the leadership models and theories you have researched and explain how you will integrate them into a leadership framework that will address each of the key issues Meridian is experiencing. Explain how applying this framework could improve communication and conflict management, increase staff motivation, and foster subordinate commitment rather than control.
- Review the members of the interdisciplinary team and explain how you would modify this general model to meet the unique needs of the team members, regardless of position or level. Explain why the modifications are necessary and how they will improve the interdisciplinary team’s effectiveness in communication, conflict management, and motivation, so you can lead the team through commitment rather than compliance or resistance.
Evaluation of Leadership Practice Competencies
- Evaluate the leadership practice competencies required to successfully lead Meridian, including situational assessment, interpersonal relationships, influence processes, and communication. Discuss whether the leadership framework you proposed will be effective at Meridian and explain why. Cite specific connections between leadership practice, organizational outcomes, and workforce engagement.
Include speaker notes for each content-related slide that represent what would be said if giving the presentation in person. These notes should expand upon the information included on the slide and should include a minimum of 50-100 words per slide.
Part 2: Reflection
In a 250-word reflection, address the following:
- Discuss how the Part 1 “Meridian Integrated Health Network Case Study” activities shaped your understanding of leadership in complex health care systems. Identify the leadership competencies you believe are most critical to your own professional development and provide examples of how you would apply these competencies in a real-world health care informatics or health care leadership role.
- Describe how Christian worldview principles such as servant leadership, stewardship, compassion, integrity, and respect for human dignity can inform ethical decision-making, collaboration, and responsible leadership within health care informatics and complex health systems.
Support the assignment by citing a minimum of five scholarly references in addition to the textbook content.
Submit the Part 1 digital presentation and Part 2 reflection to the digital classroom.
Solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide.
