1. Write a short narrative paragraph

This is your discussion of the topic, not a summary pasted from the article.

For example, if the topic is AI in healthcare, you would explain:

How AI is being used today.

Benefits and challenges.

What you think its future role may be.

2. Use at least one authoritative source inside the paragraph

When information from the source first appears, you must cite it in APA format.

Example:

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to improve diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision-making (Smith & Jones, 2024).

Your instructor specifically says:

Use recent sources (within the last 5 years).

Use peer-reviewed journal articles, government sources, or reputable organizations like WHO.

The source must have identifiable authors and references.

Do not use blogs, newspapers, editorials, discussion panels, or random websites.

3. After the paragraph, provide the source information

Immediately below the narrative, include:

What your professor means by “substantively used”

This is important.

They don’t want you to just throw a citation at the end of a sentence.

Bad example:

AI is becoming popular in healthcare (Smith, 2024).

That doesn’t show you actually used the article.

Good example:

Smith (2024) found that AI-assisted diagnostic systems improved the accuracy of disease detection and reduced the time required for clinical decision-making. These findings suggest that AI may help healthcare providers deliver more efficient patient care.

That demonstrates that you actually read and used the source.

What “string citations are not allowed” means

Don’t do this:

AI is helpful (Smith, 2024; Jones, 2023; Brown, 2022; Lee, 2021; White, 2020).
