Design Tips
Conveying information should be the focus of poster design. Posters should be informative and graphically appealing.
- The project’s topic, thesis, scope, methodology, results, and conclusions should all be clear.
- Include: presenter name(s), academic program, faculty advisor(s), and project title.
Color Choices & Backgrounds
- Use color contrast between the background color and the text color.
- Avoid “artsy” style and design elements that may be distracting.
Graphics
- Limit image resolution to 150 dpi.
- All image graphics should be .tif, .gif for transparency, or .jpg for non-transparent images. The preferred image format for all inserted images is JPEG if you do not need a transparent background.
- To add graphs or charts from Excel to your poster, copy in Excel and paste into PowerPoint.
- Caption images, tables, etc. for clarity and for attribution.
Text
- Standard font sizes: Title 72-120; Subtitle 48-80; Section Headers 36-72; Body Text 24-48.
- Sans-serif fonts are best, particularly for the title, subtitle, and headers.
References
- Sources that support content on the poster should be provided in one of two formats: part of the poster (if space allows), or in a separate Word document to function as a handout.
Although not required for this assignment, it is worth noting that some poster presenters provide handouts with a synopsis of their poster presentation. This can be helpful for observers to reference after a conference has ended, or to contact the presenter.
