Writing Project

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to help students learn how to analyze and evaluate the spread of a disease or health condition on a global scale. The project has several goals: (1) encourage thorough research into the chosen disease, including its causes, symptoms, transmission, treatment, and reportability. (2) Help students understand and apply epidemiological concepts to the chosen disease. (3) Teach students how to analyze epidemiological data and identify patterns in disease prevalence, incidence, mortality rates, and case fatality rates by various demographic factors. (4) Explore the social determinants of health that influence disease development. (5) Provide a global perspective by comparing disease indicators between the United States and another country. (6) Highlight the importance of public health efforts in addressing the chosen disease. (7) Cultivate critical thinking skills in assessing the impact of the disease on the selected country or countries. (8) Refine students' skills in communicating research findings through a well-structured and professionally formatted written paper. Finally, the project seeks to encourage the synthesis of research findings and their translation into actionable insights, thereby advancing our understanding of health promotion, disease prevention, and disease management in different global contexts.

Learning Outcomes:

By the completion of this assignment, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate research proficiency as the ability to conduct effective research using epidemiologic literature to explore a specific disease or health condition in an international context.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of epidemiological concepts, including communicability, acuteness or chronicity, causes, symptoms, complications, treatment, mode of transmission, and reportability related to a chosen disease or health condition. Apply the epidemiological triangle or multicausation disease model to analyze the factors influencing the chosen disease, including host, agent, and environmental factors.
  • Interpret and analyze epidemiological data, including prevalence, incidence, mortality rates, and case fatality rates, focusing on identifying patterns by time, gender, race/ethnicity, age, and geographic location. Compare and contrast health indicators of the chosen disease between the United States and another selected country, highlighting insights and discoveries regarding disease patterns and trends.
  • Analyze and discuss the global implications of the chosen disease, considering its prevalence, historical context, population characteristics, and other relevant factors in a specific international context (excluding the United States). Apply critical thinking skills to assess the impact of the chosen disease on the selected country or countries, including economic consequences, outbreaks, diagnostic challenges, treatment successes or difficulties, and societal norms or stigma.
  • Communicate research findings and analysis effectively through a well-structured and organized written paper that adheres to APA formatting and citation guidelines.
