Health & Medical Question

Overview

Overview:

For your midterm paper, you will conduct a healthcare quality analysis using the synthetic patient dataset provided in this course. This assignment serves as a summative assessment of your learning in Modules 1-6 and focuses on your ability to apply data science principles to address clinical nursing practice problems. This paper specifically addresses course objectives 1-3 (see Syllabus document).

  1. Paper Components and Requirements: Introduction (0.5-2 pages)
  • Clearly state your selected research question (from Discussion Assignment 2)
  • Explain the relevance of this question to nursing practice and healthcare
  • Provide an evidence-based rationale for why this question is important to patient-centered care/outcomes
  1. Methods (1-3 pages)
  • Data Source and Variables
    • Identify and justify the specific variables you selected for your analysis
    • Explain how these variables align with your research question, and how your initial exploratory analysis informed or influenced your variable selection
    • The synthetic dataset is under Module 4 ()
  • Data Preparation
    • Describe any data cleaning or preparation steps you took
    • Discuss any data quality considerations that affected your analysis
  • Modeling/Analytical Approach
    • Describe the descriptive statistics you will generate
    • Explain the specific measures of association or statistical tests you will use
    • Briefly state why these analytical methods are appropriate for your research question
  1. Results (2-3 pages)
  • Descriptive Statistics
    • Present relevant descriptive statistics for your selected variables
    • Include appropriate tables and/or figures to visualize your data
    • Clearly label all tables and figures
  • Statistical Analysis
    • Report the results of your measures of association or statistical tests
    • Interpret what these statistical findings mean in relation to your research question
    • Address statistical significance (if applicable)
  1. Discussion (2-3 pages)
  • Interpretation of Findings
    • Discuss the implications of your findings for nursing practice
    • Connect your results to healthcare quality indicators and/or patient outcomes
    • Explain how your findings might influence clinical decision-making
  • Ethical and Cultural Considerations (building on Discussion Assignment 3)
    • Identify potential biases in the data that could affect interpretation
    • Discuss cultural factors that should be considered when interpreting your results
    • Address any ethical implications related to data usage and patient privacy
  • Limitations
    • Acknowledge limitations of the dataset and your analysis
  1. Conclusion (0.5-1 page)
  • Summarize key findings
  • Reflect on the value of data analytics in nursing practice
  • Suggest potential next steps for further exploration

Format and Technical Requirements

  • Length: 6-10 pages (excluding title page, references, and appendices)
  • Format: APA 7th edition, (including 1-inch margins, double-spacing, and the use of a clear, accessible font like Times New Roman 12pt or Arial 11pt). Consider using a template (e.g. Template A Download Template A or Template B Download Template B) to help with the formatting.
  • Include a minimum of 5 scholarly references published within the last 5 years. (Feel free to include additional references published more than 5 years ago, as appropriate to support your points)
  • Include appropriate tables and figures to illustrate your findings
  • Include your Excel file(s) with your analysis as an appendix or separate submission, as a way to show your work

Tips For Success

  1. Build on your work from Discussion Assignments 2 and 3 and your Data Plan Milestone. Make sure you incorporate any feedback from your instructor on those formative assessments.
  2. To make the analysis easier, you can use this provided Analysis Toolkit for your statistical analyses (Office 365 required)

  3. Focus on simple, clear analyses rather than complex statistics.
  4. Remember that appropriate interpretation of your findings is more important than sophisticated analyses.
  5. Acknowledge limitations honestly and thoughtfully.
  6. Remember that this is a learning opportunity, not an exercise in perfection. Your earnest effort and engagement with the data is the most important part!

Statistical Analysis Guidance

For this assignment, focus on basic descriptive statistics and simple inferential tests if appropriate for your research question:

  • Descriptive Statistics:
    • Frequencies and percentages
    • Measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode)
    • Measures of dispersion (standard deviation, range)
  • Simple Inferential Statistics (choose what's appropriate for your data):
    • Chi-square test (for categorical variables)
    • t-test (for comparing means between two groups)
    • Correlation coefficients (for examining relationships between continuous variables)

Submission Guidelines

  • Submit your paper as a Word document
  • Include your Excel file with analyses as a separate submission
