In this first journal task, you will reflect on an overarching problem addressed in Case 1 of your textbook. You will respond to guiding questions that will inform a brief problem statement you will write for this particular case. The problem statement should define the global health issue that the intervention addresses. This task will help prepare you to analyze the global health issue of maternal mortality in the Nippes Department in Haiti—the global health issue presented in the final project case study.

Read Case 1, “Beginning of the End: Eliminating Meningitis A Across Africa’s Meningitis Belt” in your textbook. In a journal assignment, address the following guiding questions:
- The Problem: What appears to be the problem in the case study? How do you know that this is a problem? What are the immediate and “spillover” effects if the problem is not addressed?
- Issues to Be Addressed: What are the immediate issues that need to be addressed by an intervention strategy? Briefly discuss.
- New Vaccine Introduction: Use the checklist to determine whether the case study intervention applies to these five concepts:
- Information Gathering: Did the intervention collect information about: the disease, the rationale for the new vaccine, possible adverse events, target groups, and the overall situation? If so, what information was collected? If not, what information was not collected?
- Health Care Workers: Were the needs of health care workers identified? Were key messages prepared? Were health care workers trained? If so, explain. If not, where were the gaps?
- Influencers: Were influencers identified? Was a coordination mechanism established? Were key messages for influencers developed? If so, explain. If not, where were the gaps?
- Media: Were key messages created for the media? If so, explain. If not, where were the gaps?
- The Public: Was research conducted to see how the public felt about the vaccination? Were key messages for the public prepared? Was the public informed? If so, explain. If not, where were the gaps?
- Problem Statement: After answering each guiding question, develop a concise, one- to two-sentence statement of the problem based on your answers to the guiding questions.
Refer to the first case study in your textbook as well as the article Introducing New Vaccines in Developing Countries to support your responses. You must incorporate at least one resource from the module.
Note: This task will help prepare you to analyze the global health issue presented in the final project, a case study on maternal mortality in the Nippes department in Haiti.
