CASE:
A 45-year-old woman visits the nurse practitioner for complaints of bilateral knee pain. Before seeing the nurse practitioner, the woman has her height, weight, and vital signs taken by the medical assistant. The patient’s height is 5’4”, weight is 176 pounds, and blood pressure is 162/90 mmHg. The medical assistant alerts the nurse practitioner of these findings via the patient’s electronic health record. During the assessment, the nurse practitioner calculates a general body mass index (BMI) using the patient’s age, height, and weight data, and then compares the patient’s current weight with that of 2 years ago when the patient was last seen. The nurse practitioner determines the patient’s weight gain of 35 pounds and BMI of 30.2%. During the assessment, the patient tells the nurse practitioner, “I can’t stop eating. I have an intense craving for sweets and sugary carbs all day long.”
