Begin by identifying a patient brochure or a patient online resource related to a health topic of your choosing. You may use the same topic you identified in this week’s Health Promotion through Education Discussion. Please keep in mind that the information you gather while completing this assignment will be helpful as you develop your Module 7 project.
Part 1Review the The SMOG Readability FormulaDownload The SMOG Readability Formula (Ohio State University) and the accompanying example. Following that same formula evaluate the readability levels of the resource you selected, then, answer the following questions.
Remember, this should come from a reliable source intended for the general population/community, not a medical journal. You can use patient education materials you find at work or something you’re interested in online.
SMOG Readability Assessment
- What is the title and publication date of the pamphlet or website?
- What agency or person authored/sponsored the pamphlet or website?
- Who is the intended (targeted) audience for the information?
- Using the SMOG formula, what is the estimated readability level of the pamphlet/brochure or website? Show/explain your math.
Include the website or other source where you retrieved the information in APA format.
Part 2
Write a brief paragraph that includes the following information:
- How might the readability level compare with the abilities and needs of your target population?
- How suitable was the pamphlet for the majority of your target population?
- Describe one strength of the pamphlet or website for the information presented
- Describe how you could improve the pamphlet or website for the target population.
