Discussion A
Kyle is a 28-year-old man who is experiencing lower abdominal discomfort and frequent diarrhea (more than 15 bowel movements per day). Kyle reports that he has experienced episodes of loose stool, but it seems to be getting worse. He also reports having lost 15 pounds in the past month. His physician instructs him to visit a gastroenterologist for a colonoscopy. The colonoscopy reveals inflammation in the rectum, sigmoid colon, ascending colon, and ileum. What might be Kyle’s diagnosis? Provide the pathophysiology of this disorder (in your own words) using scholarly resources to substantiate your findings.
Your initial post should be between 200-250 words. Please substantiate your argument and assertions. Provide APA-style references in your post.
Discussion B
From your reading this week, choose one clinical manifestation of interest (e.g. anorexia, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, or other), and relate the pathophysiology of the clinical manifestation to an associated digestive disorder.
What treatment or management options would you recommend for all (or most) patients with your chosen clinical manifestation and associated gastrointestinal disorder. How is this different than health promotion you would give patients without clinical manifestations associated with the pathophysiology of digestion?
Your initial post should be between 200-250 words. Please substantiate your argument and assertions. Provide APA-style references in your post.
VOICE THREAD
This week you continue to prepare for your course Signature Assignment (due in week 8) by composing annotations from research articles and sharing your research with the class. Review the Signature Assignment directions in week 8 to make sure your research this week meets the requirements.
This assignment has two steps, the second of which MUST be completed by Friday at 11:59 p.m., CT:
- Research a condition caused by gastrointestinal disease or injury and find two peer-reviewed sources.
- Record a brief summary of your annotations in VoiceThread by Friday at 11:59 p.m., CT.
- Respond to your peers by Sunday at 11:59 p.m., CT.
STEP 1: RESEARCH A CONDITION CAUSED BY GASTROINTESTINAL DISEASE OR INJURY
Select a condition caused by gastrointestinal disease or injury (such as, gastritis, ulcers, malabsorption syndromes, liver failure, or pancreatitis, as examples) from this week's content. Using the Gangwish Library or another peer-reviewed scholarly source, locate two scholarly peer-reviewed articles relating to the chosen disorder.
In a Word document or a PowerPoint slide, write an annotation for both articles. Format your document with your name and your selected disease at the top. In the body of your document, type the APA-style reference followed by a 200-250-word annotation. Refer to the Writing the Annotated Bibliography OU LibGuide for examples of annotations.
You do not need a title page or a reference page. Use 12-point font, single-spacing and try to fit both annotations on one page/slide.
STEP 2: PRESENT YOUR RESEARCH TO OUR COMMUNITY OF LEARNERS
Use a video discussion tool called VoiceThread (VT) to present your reasoning (i.e., argument related to your chosen disease for this week) to your peers in a video recording. Your presentation should provide a brief summary of the articles and explain how the research you have gathered informs:
- the care management of the patient,
- the promotion of the patient’s health, and
- the prevention of further disease.
Your recording should be no more than 8 minutes in length. Include the following:
- Add your annotations document to the Gastrointestinal Disorders Research Annotations VT.
- A video or audio recording sharing a brief summary of each article and your reasoning for selecting the articles.
POSTING IN VOICETHREAD:
Post your annotations and video or audio presentation in VoiceThread by Friday at 11:59 p.m., CT following these steps:
- Click the "Week 6 Gastrointestinal Disorders Research Annotations" link to launch VT.
- Click "Launch" to open VoiceThread in a new browser tab.
- Click the "Start Assignment" button to begin.
- Add your annotation document by uploading the file from your computer (or use one of the other supported options).
- Edit the Presentation name to be descriptive of your topic.
- Add a video or audio comment to record your rationale.
- Click the "Submit" button to submit your VT to the "Student Gallery." This will close VoiceThread. This MUST be done by by Friday at 11:59 p.m., CT.
STEP 3: RESPOND TO YOUR PEERS
Collaborate and have a conversation with your peers about how the research they shared relates to your own clinical reasoning and knowledge. Reviewing the annotations of your peers can also help you find research for your Signature Assignment.
Complete the following by Sunday at 11:59 p.m., CT:
- Go back into the VoiceThread assignment to click on the "Student Gallery" link to view the presentations of your peers.
- Reply to at least two peers’ presentations to further the discussion (and findings) as it relates to your own clinical reasoning and knowledge.
Due: Submit your annotations and video or audio presentation in VoiceThread by Friday at 11:59 p.m., CT. Reply to at least two peers by Sunday at 11:59 p.m., CT. Please respond to people who do not yet have two comments.
This presentation is worth 40 points. Check your work against the grading rubric before submitting your presentation.
