Case Study Tips
- Read the case at least three times before you start any analysis
- Note the facts and identify which are relevant to the tasks you have been assigned
- If the case contains large amounts of data, analyze this data for relevant trends
- If the case involves a description of an organization's history, find the key events, and consider how they may have impacted the current situation
- Consider using techniques like SWOT analysis and Porter's five forces analysis to understand the organization's strategic position
- Stay with the facts when you draw conclusions
- These include facts given in the case as well as established facts about the environmental context
- Do not rely on personal opinions when you put together your answer
- Support your comments with relevant literature citationsWelcome to Week 2 in HIM 6018. This week’s activities include the first ethics case study assignment, Case #3 which is entitled “To Suspend or Not to Suspend?” and was selected from the required course text “Ethics Case Studies for Health Information Management” by Leah Grebner, which is required reading material. The case study focuses on the topic of the selective suspension of physician privileges at Community Medical Center when clinicians fail to complete patient health records in a timely manner and within the timeline specified by the institution. The case describes a scenario where this policy is suspended or "unenforced" for a select group of clinicians for a variety of reasons described in the vignette. The case study features seven (7) discussion questions that focus on various aspects of the case and that require the development of appropriate comprehensive responses.I would suggest browsing all of the cases in the Grebner course text since it contains some very useful information related to health informatics ethics scenarios and their relationship to various professional credentials and how to generate case study analyses.Course participants should be aware that results obtained from prior case study analyses indicate that "good" or "thorough" case studies are rarely completed with a content that is less than "1,500 words, NOT including the question "stems" or template text and the supporting citations or bibliography. While this may seem an arbitrary number, the intention is to encourage course participants to utilize their previous coursework and additional research using the primary literature to thoroughly address and respond to the various questions associated with each case vignette with original comments and discussions. Therefore, the minimum word count for the case study analyses for cases #3, #6, #12 and #18 is 1,500, words NOT including the question "stems" or template text and the supporting literature citations or bibliography. Please note that a template is provided in the “Modules” folder (“HIM 6018 Case Study Assignment Template.docx”) that can be downloaded and should be used in generating the completed assignment for Case #3 which should be submitted using the appropriate link in the “Assignment” folder. The template should be modified with the appropriate questions for cases #6, #12 and #18 that can be found in the case pdf files in the "Modules" folder and the course textbook. Note, that some of the questions are different for the various cases, such as the case #6 questions.I would also suggest that literature citations are cited correctly in the body of the document, as well as at the end in a citation list, to indicate which citation provides appropriate supporting evidence for the question response.I would strongly encourage all course participants to access the course Canvas site prior to the assignment submission deadline to ensure familiarity with the “Assignment” folder and the process for submitting the completed case study document. To facilitate correct review and grade assignments, I would request that all assignment submissions should be identified using the following file naming nomenclature - Lastname case #.doc or docx.
