Overview
I'm working on a history multi-part question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.
The 1970s were a period of economic, ideological, and political crisis for NYC as the city's and nation's long post WWII economic boom came to an end. Interesting enough, the arts flourished during this period.
Watch about 10 minutes of documentary on NYC during the 1960s and the 1970s fiscal crisis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gr5iF8Zdobc&t=3674s. (from 1:44:20 to 1:57:32)
- Does the documentary think that many of the federal programs of the 1950s and 1960s end up helping or hurting NYC?
- What was happening to the crime rate in this period? What was happening in the Bronx in this period?
- Did the city have fiscal difficulties during this period and almost go bankrupt? If so, why?
- What was President Ford’s response when the city asked for federal help

Why Hip Hop Began in the Bronx- Lecture for C-Span.pdf
- Does the author say that hip hop was only music or does he say hip hop included other forms of art?
- Who was Clive Campbell (DJ Kool Herc) and why is he important?
- Did hip hop come out of nowhere? What was the cultural scene like in the Bronx before hip hop? What are th different reasons the author thinks hip hop started there?
- Did a particular immigrant group play an important role in the development of Bronx hip hop?
- In the section of the article “Tragedy as Opportunity”, Naison links hip hop to the difficulties that the Bronx faced in this period. What’s his argument?
Short article on punk rock art scene of the 1970s https://www.gothamcenter.org/blog/relics-of-the-underground-the-afterlife-of-cultural-spaces?rq=punk
- What were some of the names of the punk rock clubs and in what area of the city were most of them located?
- In the 7th paragraph beginning with “The emergence of and changes undergone” the author makes an argument about how and why this flourishing of art and music is connected to political and economic changes the city was undergoing. What is that argument?
