Overview
PLEASE READ INSTRUCTIONS ALL THE WAY THROUGH VERY CAREFULLY!
---> You will have two weeks to write this paper. It is due on December 10th before 11:59pm. (Canvas will close you out at that exact time.)
---> Unlike the earlier paper, there are NO extensions for this paper since I will need time to grade them before the semester ends. Plan way ahead and start early, in case of technical issues and life interruptions.
In no fewer than 1,250-1,750 words, double-spaced, 12pt font, Times New Roman:
1) Research one war or armed conflict in the world that happened in the 20th or 21st centuries only. For example: World War I, World War II, the Sudan, Northern Ireland, Syria, Lebanon, Vietnam, or another armed conflict. Please do not choose a current unfolding world conflict for this assignment.
2) Start with a strong topic paragraph that ends with your thesis statement.
3) Within your paper, give a summary of ALL of the following. (Please don't use subtitles or sections, just make sure all of the following content is included):
- What action(s) or incident(s) started the war?
- Who are the main participants/countries?
- Give each participant's perspective on why they believe they are fighting this war. What do they believe they are they fighting for? Keep in mind, you might not personally agree with one side or the other, but you should still find perspectives from each.
- You can then briefly relate this back to the reasons the Greeks and Trojans fought in the Trojan War.
- What are some major moments of the war/conflict you chose? Discuss the major turning points.
- How were civilians affected during the war? Start with the general ways they were affected.
- Then, find a first person account of each side's experience of the war (this can be civilians or participants/soldiers, your choice) - these should be two different perspectives. Use cited quotes from articles, news reports, journals, autobiographies, or other source from these two separate people. Again, keep in mind, you might not personally agree with one side or the other, but you should still find perspectives from each. These sources should be on your Works Cited page.
- How have the lives of the survivors of each side been changed? Both on the side of the "victor" and on the side of the "defeated." Please remember that this should be a conflict that is considered "over" and not still unfolding.
- How does this relate to the experiences, or the fate, of the Euripides' Trojan Women? Give specific cited examples from the play.
4) Sum up your conclusions/opinions about what you have learned in a strong concluding paragraph:
5) Use MLA citations both in-text AND have a complete Works Cited page for all sources you use.
Please take your time with this last paper. You have until December 10th at 11:59pm to turn it in, and while there are NO extensions on that date, please do not rush to turn it in before you have revised and edited your paper as needed. Remember to not only cite any article, journals, or outside sources you use for details about the conflict you chose, as well as the first-hand accounts, but ALSO remember to cite the epics you used to make any of your points. Whether it's The Iliad, The Odyssey, or The Aeneid, you must also include those in your citations (in-text and on the Works Cited). Please remember proper citation format. I've detailed that both in lectures and in comments I've left on your various assignments thus far, if you haven't used MLA properly.
Some questions have arisen about how to cite the Eurpides play. Here are my suggestions.
If citing "The Trojan Women" film we watched:
In-text: Euripides, “The Trojan Women.”
Works Cited Page: Euripides, “The Trojan Women.” 1971. https://archive.org/details/the-trojan-women-1971-with-greek- subtitles_202101. Accessed (put the date you watched it here). 2023.
For the written play:
If you had read a playscript published version, then I would send you to "how to cite" websites, such as:
But since this was just a PDF I offered without line numbers, you can do:
In-text: Euripides, p. (add the page number of the PDF here)
Works Cited Page: Euripides, "The Trojan Women," Professor provided PDF.
---> IMPORTANT: Please write your own work. I want to hear your voice!
I run all written assignments through Turnitin, as well as AI-detection programs. AI software has a pretty identifiable flow and style... But it can also show up when you use Grammarly to revise your paper!
If your writing is found to contain either, you will get a 0 on the assignment and there will be no time for makeups. Please be careful in writing this paper!
