Overview
You are Cuba’s permanent undersecretary to the United Nations. You have been asked to prepare a speech that will be given on the 65th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution (January 1, 2024). Your speech should describe the aims, successes, and limitations of the revolution. Your speech should describe how the Cuban revolution has tried to achieve three central aims that have guided Cuban nationalism since before 1898. These are a)the struggle to maintain national independence in the face of external control or threats to sovereignty [independence]; b)the attempt to improve life chances and social conditions for all Cubans [development]; and c)the attempt to forge a common peoplehood from the diverse and sometimes antagonistic groups living on the island [Cubanidad.] You are free to point out where failures have taken place, along with successes, but remember that your essay is meant to persuade an audience of your perspective. You should utilize examples from our readings, as well as films where relevant. You may want to discuss internationalism, both military and medical, the challenges of defining and building socialism, the relationship of the 1959 revolution to the 1898 struggle, the situation of women and Afro-Cuban people, and Cuba’s attempt to survive in a post-Soviet world. Please incorporate Ferrer, the speeches by Che and Fidel, Yaffe, and the films Maestra and An African Odyssey.
Your essay should be approximately 2000 words, typed, double-spaced, and in 12-point Times New Roman or another standard font.
