Overview
The following question will constitute part of your mid-semester exam. Responses
should be in the form of a persuasive essay that addresses all parts of the question. Keep in mind that essays should be organized around a central thesis with supporting evidence, and include introductory and concluding paragraphs.
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century America underwent enormous political, social, cultural, and economic change. Some citizens were quite happy with these developments while others were not. Utilizing lectures and assigned readings, choose TWO groups, for example, African Americans, American Indians, Industrial laborers, farmers, Big Businessmen, or Immigrants and write an essay in which you discuss how the transformation of American society affected these groups. In addition to a discussion of the changing conditions, your essay must include an analysis of: Whether the groups were satisfied or dissatisfied with the new conditions, and why?
