Overview
Choose two examples from the list below and use them to demonstrate that claim. a. White women who participated in the graded school movement and campaigned for the right to vote. b. UNC faculty and students who turned a critical eye on their society. c. Black teachers, parents, and citizens who participated in the Rosenwald school building campaign
The second part of the exam consists of an essay question worth 80 points. Choose one of the questions below and answer it by writing a well-organized, well-argued 5-page paper. You should support your arguments with evidence (quotations, anecdotes, statistics, the details of key events, etc.) drawn from the readings and the lectures. Reliance on the lectures alone will not be sufficient. Avoid writing in broad generalizations – that's assertion, not argument. Ground your claims in the particulars of historical issues and actions. You may cite references to the readings with a short source title and page number in parentheses (for example: Fragile Democracy, 25 or Like a Family, 249). Formal footnotes are not necessary. You do not need to provide citations for information drawn from your lecture notes.
