Overview
Your initial response to the question and follow-up answer should be a minimum of 250 words long. Include references and citations where necessary to ensure proper credit and documentation of your sources. You are welcome to include references in addition to the course textbook (NO websites!!!!), just ensure that you use proper documentation.
Each of your responses to 3 of your classmates should be at least 100 words, not to include any citations/references. Please push yourself to go beyond a standard, “I liked your post” and try to select particular points/examples and discuss them further. It is also appropriate for you to provide your reflections, opinions, additional examples and information. Specific examples and references should include citations and footnotes.
Please choose one of the following questions to answer:
1. In what respects were the new cultures of the mid-nineteenth century—those of utopian communalists and of urban residents—different from the mainstream culture described in Chapters 8 and 9? How were they alike?
2. How would you explain the large and expanding domestic trade in slaves between 1800 and 1860? What combination of factors produced this result?
3. What issues were resolved by the Compromise of 1850? Who benefited more from its terms, the North or the South? Why?
4. Why were the battles at Gettysburg and Vicksburg significant? How did they change the tide of war strategically? Diplomatically? Psychologically?
5. How did the war change women’s lives? Did it have a different impact on women in the Union and the Confederacy? Was it a liberating experience?
