Colonial Beginnings - Health and Disease

In this assignment, students will analyze the readings titled, “Colonial Beginnings,” on the colonial disease encounter and the management of smallpox in Boston in the 1720s. Based on these sources, who had the most knowledge on, and authority over, health and disease in colonial settings? Who or what circumstances gave them that authority?

Questions

  1. Topic Sentences: Strong topic sentences should be used to advance your argument and explain how your evidence supports your thesis.
  2. Evidence: Your argument should be supported by strong historical evidence, including several quotes from your texts. Please follow the source guidelines for each assignment, and refrain from using random digital sources.
  3. Quotes/References: You will need to quote from and cite all material in an appropriate format, in either Chicago or MLA style.
  4. Prose: Concentrate on clarity and organization. I recommend reading your paper out loud to verify that you have a logical sequence of ideas.
  5. Grammatical/Technical Issues: -Choose an appropriate title for your paper. -Avoid passive voice; be sure your sentences have a strong subject. For example, avoid sentences like “there was strong support for Lincoln’s policy.” The reader wants to know, who supported Lincoln’s policy? The following sentence is much stronger: “Republicans supported Lincoln’s policy.” -Avoid using the first person “I” in formal and analytical papers. -Write history in PAST tense. -Be sure to capitalize proper names. -Indent and single space all quotes over four lines; avoid using several long quotes in short papers. -Number your pages and remain within the page limit. -Be sure to spell check and format your paper properly. -Consult the syllabus for other course policies.
