chicago history

DIRECTIONS: Write a 5-6 page paper (1200-1400 words, Times New Roman font, 12-size, double-spaced) on ONE of these 2 prompts:

1. Movement and social mobility have defined the life of Chicago and of Americans in general. Discuss the 2nd Wave immigration (1880-1920), the Great Migration (1900-1970), and the mid-20th century suburbanization. What challenges did the city face with each wave of “new Chicagoans”? Incorporate the information found in Diagrams 1, 2, 3, and 4 into your essay.

Questions

  1. Consider these 5 episodes from the first half of the 20th century: The 1919 White Sox scandal, the “gangster era” of the 1920s, the Spanish Flu epidemic, the hardships faced by Chicagoans during the Great Depression, Chicago during World War
  2. Pick 3 or 4 of these episodes. What did each say about or helped create our “modern life” in Chicago in the early 21st century? Incorporate the information found in Diagrams 5, 6, and 7 into your essay. In your paper, you must cite ideas, facts, statistics, and arguments from the Cronon/Pacyga books, the lecture notes, the additional weekly readings, and the Diagrams. You are NOT allowed to cite outside sources (especially online sources) without the permission of your TA. Papers are due on Blackboard by 11:59pm of November
  3. Late papers will be penalized 15 points for each day late. CITATIONS: No “Works Cited” or bibliography page is needed.
  4. Your paper should have at least 2-3 citations/quotes per paragraph.
  5. Try to have least one citation from lecture notes, and one from your Cronon/Pacyga textbook. Keep your citations simple by using the in-text citation method. Below are examples to show the kinds of sources and citations you should use in your essay paper. [Note: If you are citing from a historical document assigned to Friday section, you need not put the page number. But all your quotes/citations from Pacyga/Cronon require the (pg. #) citation. • Ida B. Wells in 1909 wrote, “…” • As one real estate developer in 1962 wrote, “…” • MLK, during his visit to Chicago in 1966, said, “…” • According to Pacyga, “…” (pg. #)
