create a story map of how the national health reforms act of 1949 relates to graphic novel "cuba my revolution".

Overview

[Important: this is a world history class, not a US history class. Your topic may not be a US history topic]

Every history contains multiple stories - for this assignment you need to CONNECT your research topic to historical CONTEXT

This is an exercise in connecting evidence to context. You need to contextualize your research topic in its historical context between the 40's-60's as conveyed in the readings.

First: read the material in module 6.

Second: consider one of the following topics and decide which one you will focus on (read below before you decide):

  1. The graphic novel Cuba My Revolution & Radio speech by Che Guevara
  2. The first volume of the graphic novel Persepolis deals with the effects of the Iranian revolution on a local family, and specifically a young woman. The scholarly article explores this context in a different way, focusing on different actors and evidence.
  3. Kwame Nkrumah's text resonates far beyond postcolonial Africa - he writes of the wages of global capitalism on the countries that supported its development - which includes Africa, the middle east, entire sections of Asia and Latin America.

Third: connect your research topic to any/all these three readings and the context they invoke.

The readings details how extreme tactics in one direction will only lead to extreme responses - and while politicians plot and strategize, human beings who are far removed from their ideals and intentions pay the price. They also demonstrate different ways of telling history, or understanding events and exploring outcomes.

If you are doing a family history it may seem impossible to connect to one of the three topics - and yet your family has an experience of the 1940's-60's and it cannot have been entirely divorced from events that impacted the globe, or concepts that matter to the three topics summarized above.

Whatever format or medium, make sure you are following these guidelines:

  • if you are writing or speaking - take a breath or break up your thoughts into paragraphs. Don't do run-on sentences or speed through the script - think of your audience and edit edit edit for comprehension and clarity
  • do not let feelings drive argument - state the facts and the analysis, for ex: don't say "I feel as though the revolution was important"; say "The revolution was important because...."
  • remember to cite in the text (using footnote or parentheses) or with end notes or an addendum if your submission is in another form - a bibliography page without in-text citations is not enough because it tells us what you consulted but not how you used it

^ that is the assignment description

My research project 1 was about the Spanish flu, and then project 2 was about public health reforms, and I think for project 3 I should talk about the national health reform act of 1949. Basically in this class, we have 4 research projects and 1 final paper. Each research project has to relate to each other in some way and it has to be divided into decades. It also has to be non US related since it is a world history class. Included picture is the project rubric and the links are my project 1 and 2 for reference.
