Overview
Research independently to be able to answer the following questions (cite using MLA).
- Some people argue that the United States was founded as a Christian nation, and that its main values found in the Declaration of Independence (i.e. freedom, pluralism, etc.) are Christian values. Others argue that the United States derives its foundational philosophy from the secular ideals of the Enlightenment. Try to find evidence pro and against both positions and come to your conclusions on this topic.
- In the 1800s, both abolitionists and defenders of slavery argued that the Bible supported their position. Find evidence pro and against each position, and state what you believe to be the actual position of the Bible about slavery.
After you submit the initial response, I'll send two student responses to reply to.
Discussion Threads: Discussion Threads are found in the “Discussions” tab of the course website on Canvas. Posts will be evaluated based on length (a minimum of 200 words per week is required) and quality (based on how much a particular post contributes to the intellectual debate). In grading discussion posts, the following will be considered: how informed and insightful were the posts? Did the student address the posts of his or her classmates and "join the conversation"? Did the student address the question(s) fully? Did he or she reply if someone raised a question about their posts? Did the student use primary sources if appropriate?
