For this class assignment, you will be reading the Alien and Sedition Acts and the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions as primary sources and our textbook as a secondary source . See our Blackboard course for links to all the documents.
The Alien and Sedition Acts were passed during a time of crisis in the early years of the United States. Write an essay that examines how the concerns of the Federalist Party are reflected in the Alien and Sedition Acts. Then, examine how the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions, documents that were endorsed by the Republican Party, responed to the Alien and Sedition Acts. How do these documents represent the different visions that each political party held regarding the power of the federal government?
Reference the sources and incorporate short quotes when necessary to support your arguments. Use your textbook, but do not use additional sources and do not plagiarize any part of your analysis from any other secondary sources. I will use a program that identifies plagiarism.
Your essay should have an introduction, 4-8 paragraphs where you analyze the sources to write your essay. Estimated length: 2 -4 pages. Your essay must be typed, double-spaced,12 point font and proofread.The Writng Center at TM can help you with drafts of your paper and it is mandatory that you use the services. Your essay should have an introduction with a clearly stated thesis statement, 4-8 body paragraphs and a conclusion. I have attached an essay outline in BB to help you with your papers organization, use it.
Be sure to submit your draft to the writing Center no later than Wednesday ,October 13th to make sure they have time to review your draft.
Always cite your source when you quote and paraphrase. For this essay, you will use paranthetical citation. For the textbook, you will follow the quote with this (Foner, page ??), for the other sources use: (Alien and Sedition Act) and (Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions). Again, no other sources can be used.
