HISTORY QUESTIONS

Overview

1. Reading Between the Lines

Runaway slave advertisements were written from the perspective of enslavers, yet they reveal crucial details about the lives, skills, and resistance of enslaved people. As you examine these ads, what stands out to you the most? What do they reveal about the individuals who escaped and the fears of enslavers? How do these ads challenge or expand your understanding of resistance and self-liberation?

2. Reflection: Escape

The Role of Allies and Community – The success of the Underground Railroad depended on a network of people, both free and enslaved, Black and white, who took great risks to help others reach freedom. What does this tell us about the power of collective action? Can you think of modern examples where people have put themselves at risk to help others gain freedom, justice, or safety?

3. Reflection: Slave Narratives

"Voices of Resistance and Survival" – As you read the slave narratives, what aspects of their experiences stood out to you the most? How did these individuals express their resistance, resilience, or hope in their own words? What emotions did their stories evoke for you?

4. Violence as a Means of Resistance

Many enslaved people turned to armed rebellion as a way to fight for their freedom, despite knowing the likely consequences. Considering revolts like the Stono Rebellion, Nat Turner’s Rebellion, and Denmark Vesey’s planned uprising, what are your thoughts on the use of violence as a form of resistance? Do you think these rebellions were necessary, justified, or inevitable?
