The instructional materials this week present contrasting images of modern cities of the West with the accounts of the American Indian Movement, the farm workers' plight (Cesar Chavez address), and the Watts riots. How might it be possible to reconcile the great prosperity seen in these cities of the West in the twentieth century with the plight of these oppressed groups? Do these reform movements capture a relatively brief period in Western history, or do they reflect conditions that have persisted in the longer view of Western history?
