Overview
Write a 2-3 page paper on a close reading of a primary document that you will use in my final project. (Yes, I am going to ask you to do the final for me later on down the road....so make sure that whatever you choose now, you'll be able to relate it to a Final topic that you will be choosing for me)
Remember, this document should be used to prove your thesis in your final project.
- 2-3 double spaced pages (I WANT IT BE ALMOST EXACTLY 3 PAGES), 1" margins, double spaced, 12 font, times new roman. (You need to use a bibliography/work cited page, not included in the word count). Chicago-style format.
Guidelines/Things you MUST Include:
1. Begin your paper by identifying the primary source you are using and explain what type of source it is: example a petition to the Sultan, A letter to from a merchant, an excerpt from a memoir… etc, and place it in historical context
2. If possible, Identify the writer
3. Give a short summary of what the document is about, or what the purpose of the document is.
4. Do a close reading of the document, taking into consideration whenever possible, bias, tone, voice, audience, author, and give your analysis
5. Include your analysis. Analysis is a very important part of your paper.
6. Write your conclusory paragraph.
7. Be sure to refer to the text in your analysis, and back up any claims you make.
The paper does not necessarily have to be in the above order but needs to include all points.
****I have attached 2 different primary sources you can base your paper on, in which were from the course syllabus. You may use a different primary source rather than these that you find online yourself, but make sure that it relates to the course. The course description is as follows:
"A Tale of a Few Cities: Economy, Culture, and Trade in the Middle East during the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries." - This seminar introduces you to the long urban tradition of cities in the Middle East that include some of the world’s oldest cities, such as Aleppo, Istanbul, Cairo and Damascus. We will begin by analyzing and critiquing the orientalist scholarship that attributes a timeless essence to these cities, and continue with taking a very nuanced look at the way that Ottoman modernization, colonialism, and nation building have all contributed to the profound changes that have shape the modern cities today. The seminar will also look into the legacy of the Ottoman Empire as seen through the study of the cities. The Ottoman Empire began as a minor principality, and became a world power by the fifteenth century. They were the most formidable empire in the world; one that shaped and influenced life on the continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa. A few of their legacies include, but are not confined to, a massive expansion of world trade, architecture, naval power, and music. Both secondary readings and primary sources will help you analyze contemporary views of these cosmopolitan spaces held by their diverse inhabitants and foreign visitors. Those sources show how these cities have borne witness to the local and the larger political vicissitudes that transformed them.

*************DO NOT USE any type of AI, ChatGpt, etc. NOTHING! This must be 100% in your own words. Make sure that it is 0% detectable on ALL AI detectors because the teacher will check and so will I. The teacher knows all these works like the back of her hand, so she will know if you are making something up or leaving something out. Some of the AI detectors I will use to detect for AI are, but not limited to, GPTzero, Grammarly, Quilbot, Copyleaks, zerogpt, etc. So please make sure there is absolutely no AI use.****************
