Answer the following two essay questions. Each essay should be about 3-4 well-developed and focused paragraphs. Begin with essay A on European and Chinese exploration and then provide a space and then write essay B on absolutism and Louis XIV. You may cut and paste your pre-written essay responses or you may write your answers from scratch. You have 150 total minutes (average 75 minutes per essay) to complete both essays.
a) Compare and contrast the goals, accomplishments and the effects of Europeans and the Chinese in the Age of Exploration (15th and 16th centuries). By first setting the two civilizations with their proper time frame, discuss what prompted them to begin exploring. What technology allowed them to proceed? What lands did they explore and what kind of contact ensued? Conclude with comparing the impact both European and Chinese exploration had on modern world history.
b) Developed as a response to division, war, and chaos, define the major features of political absolutism. Explain its appeal promising political stability and order. Next, describe how an absolute monarch undermined traditional limits and checks whether from social groups, institutions or government branches. Then move to depict the reign of Louis XIV of France and explain why his powers, beliefs, aura, and accomplishments exemplify the perfect absolute monarch.
