Instructions

Answer the following two essay questions. Each essay should be about 3-4 well-developed and focused paragraphs. Begin with essay A on the French Revolution and then provide a space and then write essay B on the Age of “New” Imperialism”. You may cut and paste your pre-written essay responses or you may write your answers from scratch. You have 150 total minutes (average 75 minutes per essay) to complete both essays.

a) Trace the events of the French Revolution’s opening year of 1789. The theme of your essay is to depict the slow but sure dismantle of French absolutism. Begin with the convocation of the Estates-General to the creation of the National Assembly, Tennis Court Oath, attack on the Bastille, and the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen. Elaborate how each event chipped away the French absolutist system and propelled the revolution forward.

b) The Age of 19th century “New” Imperialism marked a decisive era in modern World History. For better or worse, Western values, ideas, technology and economic systems spread globally and shaped our present world. Discuss and explore the origins of this era by examining motivations and the tools necessary to begin and maintain imperialism. How far geographically did European imperialism’s reach extend (what parts of the world did Europe dominate)?
