Overview
The earliest civilizations of Mesoamerica, emerging as early as 2000 B.C., laid the cultural and philosophical foundations of what would become Lo Mexicano (Mexicanness) and later influence Chicanismo. To truly understand the identity, art, and worldview of Chicano culture, we must first look to these ancient origins.
This assignment invites you to explore one of the major Mesoamerican civilizations and reflect on how their achievements continue to shape Mexican and Chicano identity today.
Instructions
- Choose one civilization to focus on: the Olmec, Maya, or Aztec.
- Conduct research on their history, culture, and contributions to Mesoamerican civilization.
- In your essay, respond to the following questions:
- Who were they, and why were they important?
- What is one major achievement or contribution of this civilization?
- Why is that achievement significant within the broader context of Mesoamerican history and identity?
- Reflect personally: How does learning about this civilization deepen your understanding of Mesoamerican cultural heritage and its influence on Mexican or Chicano identity?

- Length: 2–3 pages (minimum two full pages for full credit).
- Perspective: Write in first person, keeping your discussion clear and focused.
- Format: Use MLA style, including proper in-text citations and a Works Cited page.
