Example #1 a. What specific events, topics, or people does the video talk about? What other background information do you have that gives a historical context to the story?
The video segment is a short biography on Lucretia Mott, a Quaker minister, abolitionist and women’s rights advocate. Mott was an organizer for the pioneering Seneca Falls Convention in 1848. Attendees created and passed the “Declaration of Rights and Sentiments” advocating for women’s rights and gender equality. Mott and other reformers were part of a new generation who came of age during the Second Great Awakening. Many of the reformers were devout Christians who used moral suasion to make the world a better place.
b. What did our U.S. History text write about this topic? Please make sure to paraphrase and utilize your own words. Chapter 13 covers all the different reform movements and has a short section on Women’s Rights (13.5). In the section titled “The Declaration of Rights and Sentiments,” Mott is mentioned, along with other pioneering feminists including Lydia Maria Child and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. “The Declaration of Rights and Sentiments” took phrases from the Declaration of Independence and proclaimed “that all men and women are created equal.” c. Who created the video? Is the source credible? Anyone can post a video, but how authentic is the story? How do you assess the credibility of a source? The short segment came from the documentary titled “The Oratory of Women's Suffrage” produced by Educational Video Group. The Educational Video Group creates educational documentaries focused on public speeches and primary sources. Since the segment came from our City College Learning Resource Center, Films on Demand database, it is a credible source – all documentaries/videos are vetted by librarians and other credible educators.
d. How did you find it and why did you select the video? I went into our City College video database https://library.sdcity.edu/videoLinks to an external site., clicked on Films on Demand, and searched for Lucretia Mott. I wanted to find something on Mott after I read about her in U.S. History, chapter 13. Her picture (in U.S. History) looked so severe and serious and I wanted to find out more about her.
