Your essay is to describe the origins of the divide between Sunni and Shia Muslims, and to note why this topic is still significant today. The textbook gives plenty to think about . . . Note the areas of the world that are Shia, and those that are Sunni. Which is bigger? Why is this significant in geo-political terms. Note, for instance, how Iran could play a role in Iraq's politics due to Shia connections (and how the Sunnis in Iraq would react). Should Americans care about the religious make-up of countries with whom they hold relations and have a military presence? Who was Muawiya? And Ali? What do they have to do with all this?
