The Yazidis: Survival, Identity, and Genocide

Overview

  • This is the abstract of my group project so make sure the primary source is based on this but you do not need to relate my paper to the group project: Our topic: The Yazidis: Survival, Identity, and Genocide (Good and manageable)Book Chapterschapter 1: Who the Yazidis are (history, beliefs, where they live)chapter 2: Persecution before ISISchapter 3: The 2014 ISIS genocide and displacementChapter 4: Yazidi women and gender issues (this part is strong and important)Chapter 5: Recovery, diaspora, and the future AbstractThis project explores the history, identity, and survival of the Yazidis, a religious minority from northern Iraq, with a focus on persecution, gender, and recovery after the 2014 ISIS genocide. Our research is organized into five chapters: the history and beliefs of the Yazidis; persecution before ISIS; the 2014 genocide and displacement; the experiences of Yazidi women and gender issues; and recovery, diaspora, and the future of the Yazidi community. To support our research, we use both primary and secondary sources. Our primary sources include survivor testimonies, interviews, and first-hand accounts, such as the story “My Name is Layla and I Am a Yazidi Survivor,” as well as video interviews with Yazidi survivors and activist Nadia Murad. These sources help us understand personal experiences of violence, displacement, and survival, especially the impact on women. Our secondary sources, including the article “A Brief History of the Yazidis of Iraq” and Nelida Fuccaro’s research on Yazidi communities in Iraq, provide historical background and scholarly analysis. These sources help explain the origins of the Yazidis, their relationship with governments and surrounding societies, and the long history of discrimination that shaped later events.By combining historical research with personal testimonies, this project aims to show not only the suffering experienced by the Yazidis, but also their resilience, identity, and ongoing efforts to rebuild their community.
