his course will introduce students to the major historical issues arising out of Japan’s catastrophic defeat in the Second World War and its subsequent seven-year military occupation by the Allied Powers, led by the United States. The Allied Occupation of Japan represented an at-times exhilarating opportunity for Americans and even some Japanese to radically remake an entire society onto a more democratic, progressive, and even utopian footing. For others, the Occupation was a source of national humiliation, an extension of wartime suffering, and a strange moment of confusion and unsettledness. The second half of the Occupation coincided with the intensification of the Cold War and the so-called “Reverse Course,” when the United States retreated from its democratization mandate and moved toward remaking Japan into a military ally.
