Module 2 HST 347 Ancient Greece

4Module 2 Reading Response - Group 4

For this reading response post, you have two options. Pick which you would like to answer:

Option 1:

Chapter 1 sources under D, E, and F relate the often precarious relations between Greeks and their neighbors, especially for Greek colonies. Yet, without calling them inaccurate or biased (because all humans and thus all sources have bias), these sources were crafted with specific perspectives meant to advance specific narratives.

Analyze at least three of the four mentioned sources in thinking about these questions: How do the sources legitimize Greek colonization in new territories? How do they explain conflict between Greeks and their non-Greek neighbors? How do they enforce ethnic and cultural separation from their neighbors instead of mixing or assimilation?

Option 2:

Chapter 1 sources (B2, D1, G1, G2, H3, and H) engage with a number of (not entirely) contradictory ancient Greek views of what constituted a citizen. These views include, among others, what made one a citizen, the benefits of being a citizen, and the duties and burdens of a citizen. Pick three of the assigned primary sources. Then, use them to discuss three different conceptions of the ancient Greek citizen, with each source representing one conception. As a help, you should organize your post around defining those three elements already mentioned: the form, the benefits, and the burdens. Note: there may be some overlap between your examples, so do not worry if your three conceptions are completely different. They won’t be...

Your response should be at least 300 words in length, and must provide page numbers when you make specific references to the readings. Parenthetical citations like this example are best (Nagle and Burstein, 22).

Respond to at least one fellow student (you must pick a student who chose a different prompt).
