HST 347 Ancient Greece Module 6

Overview

Polis Game: City of Justice? - Group 4

For this assignment, you have two options:

Option 1: You are a man from your city attending Plato’s Academy in Athens around the year 375. In the style of Plato’s dialogues (especially the assigned reading from the Republic), write a short Socratic dialogue between characters on why your fictional city came closer to the ideal of a just polis than Athens, providing specific details from your city’s history and its system of government. Some of this content should be expanding on details you have discussed in previous assignments, but some of it will be new.

  • Should be at least 400 words in length
  • Should reference the assigned reading (The Republic) at least three times.
  • Since you weren’t assigned to read all of Plato’s Republic, let the lecture be your guide in understanding Plato and his larger themes and claims in the Republic.
  • Post at least one response comment to a classmate. If you are responding to a Plato post, make your comment a continuation of the dialogue the student created (ask a follow-up question or pose a challenge to what the characters in the dialogue are saying). If you are responding to an Aristotle post, make your comment in the voice of the teacher Aristotle (ask for clarification about some point in the original post or challenge the student's interpretation of something).
  • Final note: Details about your polis' government and laws should show change over time, not just repeat the details about government and laws from your introduction presentation. This fictional document is from the 4th century, and your introduction presentation was describing the situation over 100 years before this. Your city may have started as a tyranny, and ended as a democracy, or started as a democracy and ended an oligarchy. That's fine, especially if your city experienced a lot of upheaval in that time.

Option 2: You are a student at Aristotle’s Lyceum in Athens around the year 330. Aristotle has assigned you to travel to travel to your city and write a report about its system of government and laws for his comparative study of polis governments. Keep in mind: your teacher wants empirical research, not idealism, so you should evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the city’s system of government and laws in light of its history (using Aristotle’s standards for what makes a good or defective system of government). Some of this content will be expanding on details you have discussed in previous assignments, but some of it will be new.

  • Should be at least 400 words in length
  • Should reference the assigned reading (from Aristotle’s Politics) at least three times.
  • Since you weren’t assigned to read all of Aristotle's Politics, let the lecture be your guide in understanding Aristotle and his larger themes and claims in Politics.
  • Post at least one response comment to a classmate.
