17th Century Annotation Discussion

Overview

Discussion and replys please log in if possible By the end of the day on Thursday, August 27, you should post at least three initial comments and questions. Check back and respond to each other over the course of the weekend. The conversation closes at 11:59 pm on Monday, August 31.

Make sure at least some of your questions or comments draw specific connections between this article and the other scholarly reading assigned for this week (David LaVere's article on the deerskin trade).

If you are unsure what to talk about, there are some ideas below. You do not need to answer all of these questions, or address all aspects of every question by yourself. But use them as conversation starters, or identify things along the way that relate to them, especially if you don't know where to get started.

  • How did coastal native peoples adapt their political and economic practices to engage with colonial governments? How did they seek to protect their sovereignty? How does this reflect trends you saw in other module materials?
  • How did native peoples' identities and cultures as members of their communities evolve as a result of these changes?
  • What types of primary source evidence did LeMaster use to support her argument? What are most effective? Where does the evidence seem less robust? What challenges did she face in finding primary sources?
  • What are key similarities and differences between LeMaster's interpretations and those you read in LaVere? Highlight and discuss specific examples.
