MGMT150
Management & Organizational Behavior
Research Paper
Each individual student will write a research paper, discussing an organizational behavior concept seen in a popular movie with a setting that meets the definition of “organization.”
The paper should be 8-10 pages of content (NOT including title page, abstract, references) and written in APA 7th format. FOR ASSISTANCE WITH APA FORMAT, PLEASE USE THE BOOK INDICATED ON YOUR SYLLABUS, OR GOOGLE “PURDUE OWL” AND THEN FIND THE APA 7TH REFERENCES.https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01....
Learning outcomes include:
• Application of OB theory to the organization or movie;
• Academic research and writing;
• Synthesis of the course material;
Once an organization or movie has been identified, the student should identify the specific OB topic demonstrated by the organization or movie and submit this to Canvas by the due date.
For example, let’s say you watched Pitch Perfectover the break. First, ask yourself if there is an organization (that meets the definition of an organization) in that movie. If the answer is yes, then think about the organizational behavior concepts we’re learning about in class, and choose one that is displayed in the movie. One suggestion is to look through the Table of Contents of your textbook, look up any unfamiliar terms in the glossary, and then decide which term is best seen in the movie.
You will then find 6academic journal sources(NOT books, not websites, not magazines) that help explain the organizational behavior you found in the movie or workplace, and you will write a research paper about the chosen topic and how it is evident in your selected movie (showing) or workplace and explained by the research (telling). The paper should provide quotes from the movie or specific incidents or encounters at workthat support the theory you are discussing. You will then offer your critique of what the character(s) did well and could have done better (supported by research or other course materials), as well as your own opinion. For this element of the paper, think like a manager. If you were managing this group or these individuals and were preparing a performance evaluation, for example, what did they do well? Where could they improve? What skills do they need to develop? What skills are evident strengths?
There will be a series of due dates to facilitate your timely completion of this assignment, as outlined on the syllabus, in Canvas, and on your Assignment Selection Form.
IF YOUR FINAL SUBMISSION DOES NOT ACHIEVE THE ASSIGNMENT’S REQUIREMENTS BY USING ACADEMIC JOURNAL SOURCES, INCLUDING CITATIONS AND A REFERENCE PAGE IN APA 7TH FORMAT, EXPLAINING EXAMPLES FROM THE MOVIE/WORK WITH SPECIFIC EXAMPLES FROM YOUR RESEARCH, YOU WILL RECEIVE A 0 FOR FAILURE TO ACHIEVE THE ASSIGNMENT’S OBJECTIVES.

General Paper Layout & Explanation
Title Page (page by itself)
Abstract (page by itself)
APA format requires headings. Below you will find a list of the headings required for this assignment along with a brief description of what should be included in each section.
Introduction
Your introduction should open with an attention statement that is a question, statistic, or quote. From there it should give an overview of the paper and include a thesis statement. The thesis statement should make it clear that this is a paper about a topic that you have researched and will be explained using examples from a movie.
The introduction should be 1 paragraph.
Literature Review
The Literature Review section is where you synthesize and summarize, compare and contrast, the research that you have studied about your topic. It is NOT a running list of each individual article (like you did in the bibliography). Discuss which authors agree, which disagree. Discuss similarities and differences. Discuss subsets of your topic (e.g., different types of motivation, etc.). Each source discussed should have an appropriate in-text citation, and ideally each source is discussed in this section. Any direct quotes require the correct citation including page number.
The literature review section should be 2-3 pages and should NOT mention the movie.
Movie Summary
This section provides a brief overview of the movie – just enough to give your reader some background if they have not seen it. If you use a website for assistance (e.g., to learn character names, etc.), cite it correctly in the body of the paper and list it on the reference list. It does not count as one of your 6 academic journal articles.
The Movie Summary section should be 1-2 paragraphs but not more than one page.
The last couple of sentences of this section can remind the reader of the topic, restate your thesis and then transition to the “showing & telling” section where you connect the literature to the movie.
Showing & Telling
(should be titled whatever your topic is, e.g. Motivation, Leadership, etc.)
In this section you give examples from your movie (showing) that you then explain with your research (telling), or you discuss your research (telling) and then illustrate with an example from the movie (showing). This should be a 1:1 relationship wherein every example is explained with the research. It is possible to have the same research explain more than one example, but you should use most of your research to explain these examples.
This section should be 3-5 pages and provide 5+ examples. This section satisfies the primary goal of this assignment, so it should be the longest and most thorough of all sections
Discussion
Discuss the characters’ use or experience of the topic and overall how it relates to the literature researched. Discuss strengths and be sure to include suggestions for improvement (what could the CHARACTERS have done differently to improve their experience with the TOPIC (i.e., if your topic is leadership, give suggestions as to how they could have shown better leadership). Discuss what you learned, analysis of the topic, etc. This is not a discussion of how the movie could have been better, but instead what the characters could have done better related to the topic. Be sure to support your suggestions with your research.
This section should be 2-3 paragraphs.
Conclusion
Wrap up with your final thoughts and a summary of the paper.This is generally a restatement of the thesis and a statement supporting how the paper fulfilled that thesis or how the movie demonstrated the topic in action.
This section should be 1 paragraph.
