Overview
Pre-Assignment Reading Requirement:
Before starting this assignment, please read the following article from the Project Management Institute (PMI):
Required Reading: Stakeholder Analysis: A Pivotal Practice: https://www.pmi.org/learning/library/stakeholder-a...
This article introduces the value and methods of stakeholder analysis and will help you evaluate stakeholder influence, interest, and engagement strategies. Your stakeholder map and analysis must reflect insights and terminology from the reading.
Background: EduNova, a large urban school district, is launching Project Lumina, a three-year digital transformation initiative aimed at integrating virtual learning platforms, replacing outdated learning management systems (LMS), and expanding device access to all students. The project will affect over 40 schools, hundreds of staff, and thousands of students. It requires changes in teaching methods, staff roles, communication platforms, and IT infrastructure. You are part of the project team tasked with conducting stakeholder analysis during the planning phase. Your first responsibility is to build a stakeholder map in Excel to help the leadership team visualize who is most affected and who has the power to influence project success or failure.
Your Task: Create a Stakeholder Map in Excel
Step 1: Identify 8–10 Stakeholders
Based on the scenario, generate a list of stakeholders across roles and departments. Use job titles or role descriptions rather than personal names. Example roles might include:
- District IT Director
- High School Principal
- Union Representative
- Parent Council Chair
- Grade 3 Teacher
- Student Ambassador
- Technology Vendor Rep
- Head of Curriculum
- Assistant Superintendent
- Librarian/Media Specialist
Step 2: Assign Scores
Using Excel, create a table with the following columns:
# | Stakeholder Name | Impact of Change (1-10) | Level of Influence (1-10) |
Score each stakeholder based on:
- Impact of Change: How significantly the change will affect their day-to-day responsibilities, workflows, or expectations.
- Level of Influence: Their formal and informal power to influence decisions or others’ behavior.
Use a 1–10 scale for both metrics (1 = low, 10 = high).
Step 3: Visualize on a Stakeholder Map (Scatter Chart)
Create an XY Scatter Plot in Excel, with:
- X-axis = Impact of Change
- Y-axis = Level of Influence
Add axis lines at the midpoint (5) to divide the map into four quadrants (As shown in the videos below):
- Collaborate With (High Impact, High Influence)
- Maintain Confidence (Low Impact, High Influence)
- Involve and Support (High Impact, Low Influence)
- Monitor (Low Impact, Low Influence)
Label each stakeholder on the chart as shown in your as shown in the videos below.
Expected Deliverables: A completed Excel sheet with:
- Stakeholder names
- Impact of change scores
- Influence scores
- Scatter plot stakeholder map
A brief (300–500-word) summary explaining:
- Your reasoning for scoring each stakeholder
- One recommended engagement strategy for each quadrant
- Any surprising insights or concerns from the map
Useful Video for Assignment:
Requirements:
- There is no minimum or maximum required number of pages. Your analysis will be considered complete, if it addresses each of the components outlined above.
